In this post we will learn how to install EMACS 26.1 on Ubuntu 18.04. Get the best text editor around on the latest Ubuntu release.
If you have read almost any of my other posts then you should know that I favor EMACS over that other text editor. In this post, I will walk you through installing the latest release of EMACS (as of this writing) on Ubuntu 18.04.
Make sure that your system is all the up to date.
$ sudo apt update && apt upgrade -y
Once it is complete then reboot.
Make sure you have all the packages that are needed to build source code installed.
$ sudo apt install build-essential libncurses-dev
Download the source code
You can either go to the EMACS download page or run the line below to get the source code tarball.
$ wget http://mirrors.syringanetworks.net/gnu/emacs/emacs-26.1.tar.gz
After it is done downloading, extract the tarball.
$ tar -xzvf emacs-26.1.tar.gz
Build the source code
Now we are ready to do some work! Change into the new directory.
$ cd emacs-26.1/
Run configure. I include the –without-x switch because I am used to the terminal version of EMACS. If you like the GUI version then be aware you might have to install a few more development libraries to get configure to finish.
$ ./configure --without-x --with-gnutls=no
And finally install the binaries.
$ sudo make install
You should be able to run EMACS
